What's in the news...

We spend a lot of time looking through various publications for ideas to enhance SustainableBuild. Below are some snippets of news items that we found interesting in the last month or two:

The Eco-House
Ministers have laid the foundations this week for the Eco-House; homes of the future will be kind to the environment. The Eco-House is getting closer to being realised, the road to the energy-saving home which will be both sustainable and comfortable is certainly clearer than it was.

White Papers on planning and energy and a new strategy for disposing waste have this week all set out ways of making Britain's housing much more environmentally friendly.

Ikea's "Flat Pack" Homes Bound for Britain
Swedish retail giant Ikea have developed a range of energy efficient, affordable "flat pack" homes, which they are now bringing to the UK.
Planning permission has been granted for a site in St James Village, Gateshead to hold 36 BloKlok (Sweedish for "smart living") apartments.
The homes will have two/three bedrooms and will come in prefabricated timber frames and are expected to cost less than £100,00.
A New Wave of Eco-Awareness Hits Britain
More and more building companies are relishing in providing home buyers with energy efficient, sustainable buildings.

As of June 2007 anyone selling a home will have to provide an energy performance certificate showing how energy efficient the house is. Commercial house builders are now using eco-friendly techniques and buyers like the fact that new homes are now environmentally friendly and sustainable. Materials such as grass roofs sewn with wild- flowers are being used which not only benefit the environment, but also the materials prevent heat loss in winter and over heating in summer.
